A Synesthetic Week
Monday is a washed-out
pale gray like an overcast
sky. Tuesday's
some kind of blue.
Wednesday is tan
like sand, and Thursday
is a murky purple like
egg-plant hide.
Friday's brown--
old but polished
oxford shoes. And
Saturday is rusty
red--like cinnabar
or certain kinds of clay.
Pearl gray, subtle glow:

Come inside, where it's mellow dusk
and bourbon brown. I can turn it into noon
at any time, then back to blurry twilight. All
right, come outside--look: red, yellow, and blue
blossoms still want your attention. Listen
to vespering birds, hear wordless
words of traffic, of trees in rustle
and streets in hustle. Back inside
we'll take note of desire, climb a set
of stairs, so easily. We might be
caught unawares by something sweet
smiling there in mischievous shadows.
It could be us in mirror. It could be
a woman or a man or a ghost. Or just
the house itself, itself, listening.

Synesthesia
Oh, the brain is such
a busy beast, operating
on its own, only oh occasionally
letting will pretend it is a manager.
On its own, the beast
associates the Thursday word
with an aubergine purple
and velvet texture.
It links Saturday
to red, Sunday to hard
translucence, Monday to off-white
or beige, Tuesday
to blue and an upholstered feel,
Wednesday to tan and cinnamon,
a graininess. Friday: black and gray,
the vintage whimsy of
a checkerboard linoleum floor.
Brain, to what end, this
communication between strangers
in the internal jazz cafe?
